UMED had a purpose. And March 18, 2000 marked the beginning towards the path to the fulfillment of this mission. It was the day when Unilab moved beyond the confines of pharmaceutical business and set up a teaching institution for the country’s doctors. To provide the latest developments in medical science for free, with utmost objectivity and devoid of commercialism became UMED’s no. 1 goal.
UMED’s 10-year existence witnessed three prime movers - - leaders in their respective fields. Dr. Rodrigo Romulo, a specialist in Infectious Disease Medicine, led UMED from 2000-2003. After 2003, Dr. Edgardo Ortiz, a pediatric cardiologist, moved further along the path that embodies the ideals and highest ethical standards of Continuing Medical Education until July, 2009. Today, in the hands of Dr. Elizabeth Martinez, a pediatric gastroenterologist, UMED became known as the genuine partner of doctors in their professional growth and development.
In a span of 10 years, UMED established strong alliance with leading foreign and local medical teaching institutions. The representative faculty from these institutions served not only as key speakers on the appropriate subjects for the state-of-the-art conferences but also as advisers on the learning modules to be developed. The UMED faculty and facilitators comprised the program’s Circle of Mentors. UMED’s expansion could be seen at all angles. Year after year, UMED develops learning modules to widen its grasp in terms of medical specialties. Today, UMED’s modules include Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Pharmacy, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Tuberculosis, Urology, and Bioethics. UMED reached out to about 50,000 healthcare professionals through more than a thousand state-of-the art conferences, outreaches and other special events. UMED, even went beyond borders and conducted conferences in Macau, China and Myanmar. It also established UMED-Indonesia.
Ten years ago, UMED started out with three people. Now its personnel grew to 17. UMED is divided into three units: Events Management (EM), Project Development & Professional Management (PDPM), and Science Information Management (SIM). EM organizes SOA conferences and interactive sessions on various health issues for the doctors and allied health professionals. PDPM is the learning resource management of UMED in-charge of module development for health professionals and laymen. SIM is the resource center of medical information.
With ten years of experience to its name, UMED continues to fulfill its mission in Continuing Medical Education. This time with more… commitment and dedication in providing Continuing Medical Education in which excellence is the rule and exploration is the only way. | | | Photos | Click to Enlarge | |
