Bioethics, one of the latest UMED modules, was the topic for discussion in the recently concluded conference of 43 physicians of various practices from the Makati Medical Society. This was held last September 22 at the Heritage Hotel, Makati City. The occasion was also marked by the birthday of one of the meeting’s facilitators, Dr. Esperanza Rivera. After a sumptuous dinner and the opening remarks by Dr. Josefa Romano-Cruel, the participants were assigned to two small groups for an interactive discussion on the relevant bioethical issues affecting their medical practice. Dr. Esperanza Rivera, Chairman on Ethics - Philippine Medical Association and Dr. Edna Monzon, Vice President of Bioethics Society of the Philippines, effectively handled the complicated and sometimes controversial concerns of the participants. Topics ranging from doctor/ doctor and doctor/patient relationship inevitably came up in the exchange of views and ideas.

After the physicians acquired a big dose of practical knowledge on the subject matter through the small group discussions, a small fellowship activity followed the event. The activity showcased not only UMED’s commitment to the advancement of continuing medical education but also the passion for learning and dedication of participating medical practitioners.
